Keeping it real

Two beautiful and natural looking models with eyes closedSolange Knowles, Gwyneth Paltrow, Keira Knightley, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu are all fans of the natural look. Even Holly Willoughby recently tweeted a pic of herself without make up – she looked just as beautiful.

What most of us forget is that underneath all of the expertly applied make up, hair extensions, nails and clothes we are all pretty similar – the bits we add on should just be for fun (and modesty of course!). However, going natural is a choice, and not always the easiest decision to make.  Whether you are deciding to grow out your processed hair and opt for a natural do, use only natural products on your skin or just cut out processed food, it can be hard to break habitual behaviour, even if that behaviour is expensive to maintain or not very healthy.

Being naturally beautiful is about taking care of what you have and making the best of it.  Here are some cheap and easy rules which all of us can apply to our lives…

Steps to becoming naturally beautiful:

Self belief – Regardless of your level of sight, looking good can often equal feeling great. However, if you don’t believe in your own worth, no amount of dressing up will make you feel better. Whether you can see what’s in the mirror or not, take time out to think about what really makes you special, and then ask yourself what you want to say with your image. Style is just a matter of accentuating your best bits after all.

Get fit – Glowing skin, stress reduction, a great mood elevator, improved brainpower…need I say more? For tips on accessible exercise check out our Fitness page.

Eat well – Keeping your house stocked with the right food will keep you away from those unhealthy snacks. Learn to eat right by booking some time with a nutritionist through your GP. Supplementing chocolate and crisps with fruit, veg and lots of water should get you started in the right direction.

Healthy skin – Despite what the advertisers tell you, you can take care of your skin using natural products – Yes, that includes the stuff that you already have in your fridge and cupboards.  Olive Oil, Shea Butter, eggs and sea salt can all be used to care for your skin and hair, just check out the specialist resources available online.

Healthy hair – It’s so easy to forget you have your own hair underneath that weave isn’t it. Going natural can save a huge amount of money, but even if you prefer to keep your extensions in, take care of what’s underneath as one day you might change your mind.

Get enough sleep – Not getting enough sleep comes at a huge expense to your immune system. You’re much more likely to get sick if you don’t give your body the energy or time to fight against infectious viruses and bacteria, and you’ll take longer to recover from common conditions like a cold – a lack of sleep is also linked to weight gain.
