Giles Deacon for…DFS!

Giles Deacon has been making waves in the world of fashion since he graduated from Central St Martins alongside Alexander McQueen and Luella Bartley, back in the early 90s.

Deacon is best known for his collaboration with New Look. Although, formerly employed by the fashion houses Bottega Veneta and Gucci, he founded his own label, GILES, in 2003. He launched his first collection for GILES at the 2004 London Fashion Week and was named “Best New Designer” at the British Fashion Awards. Deacon’s designs sparked a renewed interest in London fashion and he was named British Fashion Designer of the Year in 2006 going on to become creative director of French fashion house Ungaro in April 2010.

So what’s he doing now? Designing DFS sofas, that’s what.

The Lipgloss sofa: an unlikely (yet stylish) product of London Fashion Week was designed by Deacon, providing households up and down the country with the chance to own their very own piece of London Fashion week.

Is this really a surprise? Well, the worlds of fashion and design have always had blurred boundaries with many fashion designers making the foray into furniture creation. Check out our feature on that very trend from catwalk to home. One of the most well-known examples is Coco Chanel who co-designed her famous sofa – immortalised as the centre piece of Frasier Crane’s apartment in the eponymous TV series – to be one of the main features of her Paris apartment.

However, this most recent collaboration could be said to be one of the most unusual.
