Like many people, I own an Apple Watch. By Kiesha Meikle.
I find it pretty useful – when I remember to put it on. That said, I never, ever, use it to tell the time.
My watch alerts me to new messages and even rings when someone is trying to call me, but I have never glanced at it to find out whether I am either early, or late for anything…why would I?
The truth is, we are all surrounded by screens that are desperate to tell us what time it is – my laptop, my phone, my fridge, my car dashboard – they are all constant visible reminders that there is only a certain amount of time to get a hell of a lot done(Ah, the life of a modern women).
Why then would I buy a watch? Because for most, buying a watch is no longer about buying a timepiece, it’s about buying an image.
What does your watch say about you?
Look, noone should dictate to you how you should spend your money. But if your watch is weighing down your arm, covered in gold and sparkly stones, and can be seen from 5 metres away…you may be doing too much.
Even if you have bought that watch to show off your personal style and that style is ‘I am flashy AF’ – you should at least be able to tell the time with it, no? If the watch face is so diamond encrusted that the big hand struggles to get around it, or it’s so large that you can’t pull your sleeve over it to even see it…Yes, you have chosen unwisely.
So, what should you buy?
What Your Watch Says About You
Watches don’t just tell the time – they tell on you. They whisper little truths about taste, temperament, and what you want the world to think when you shake someone’s hand.
The Minimalist
You wear something sleek, probably black or silver, maybe a Nomos or a Daniel Wellington. Your calendar is colour-coded, your desk is spotless, and you pretend not to care about brands – though you definitely do. You value restraint, clean lines, and the illusion of effortlessness.
The Smartwatch Devotee
You’re efficient, driven, slightly addicted to data. You like to know your heart rate, your sleep score, and whether you closed your rings before lunch. You believe technology makes life better – but deep down, you kind of miss being unreachable.
The Vintage Lover
Your watch ticks because it has to – not because a battery tells it to. You like things with history, and you’ll talk anyone’s ear off about patina and hand-wound movements. You probably own vinyl records, or at least you’ve thought about it. For you, timekeeping is romance, not routine.
The Statement Piece
Big dial. Bold logo. It catches the light – and people’s attention. You appreciate craftsmanship, but also the way a luxury watch makes a handshake feel like a power move. You’re ambitious, confident, and not afraid to let everyone know it.
The “No Watch” Type
You trust your phone, or maybe you just don’t see the point. Time is everywhere, right? But that absence says something too – you’re laid -back, unbothered by tradition, and maybe just a little allergic to formality.
In the end, the watch you wear (or don’t) is a quiet expression of who you are – or who you’d like to be. Because let’s face it, time isn’t the thing you’re really keeping track of, is it?
