Life Hack: Sleeping your way to beauty…

Sleeping woman

Whilst we all know that there’s an endless array of lotions and potions out there that can do a good job of masking any imperfections on our faces, there are few beauty treatments better or cheaper than getting a decent night’s sleep.

We all know how hard it can be to get that mythical eight hours sleep. But anybody who’s suffered a bad night’s sleep will know all about how puffy our faces can look the following morning. This is because it’s only whilst we are sleeping that our skin gets a chance to repair all of the damage that’s done on a daily basis. By giving our skin the chance to naturally produce collagen, each time we’re asleep we’re getting a little natural cosmetic surgery to stop our faces sagging. And plenty of time in bed also encourages blood flow to the skin which gives us that rosy glow. But if you’re wondering where those dark circles under the eyes have come from, it’s because sleep deficiency has caused the blood vessels under your eyes to become dilated which gives rise to those purple and grey patches.

Although there are those who’ve suggested that dark circles under the eyes can add an alluring sense of mystique, for anyone who wants that fresh-faced look, you’ll need to improve the quality of your sleep. There are many lifestyle changes we can implement such as removing fatty foods and caffeinated drinks from our diets, and even limiting the amount of screen-time before bed can have positive effects on our sleep quality.

Similarly, making our sleeping environments optimised for a good eight hour’s sleep is a great idea. Blackout blinds, air humidifiers and white noise machines, can make our sleeping spaces a lot more harmonious and conducive to a good nighrs rest. There are also several things that we can do to help our faces make the most of sleep. Check out Elle magazine’s recent feature on how different night creams can help lock in the moisture that helps our skin repair the damage of the day.
