Aromatherapy spray tan

Cucumba, The Urban Pitstop

By Catherine Moat

I am certainly no stranger to fake tan. Trust me, I’ve tried the lot, and while some of them are better than others, all of them have left me smelling distinctly ‘biscuity’ – and not in a good way!

Cucumba have teamed up with Urban Tan to offer the world’s first (and only) aromatherapy spray tan which promises to leave clients not only looking like they’ve had two weeks in the sun, but smelling sweeter too.  With only a few days to go until my own holiday in the sun, I went along to see if the claims were true…

Accessibility:  Great location on Poland Street in Central London, just behind Carnaby Street, and easy to spot from outside. The reception area is brightly lit, but heading down to the treatment area could be a problem for anyone who is blind or partially sighted with a pretty steep staircase to negotiate. However – the staff are so friendly that I’m sure a little assistance, if needed, wouldn’t be a problem…

Durability: Although turning ever so slightly patchy in the usual places i.e. elbows, hands and ankles, the tan was still going strong five days later, despite daily dips in the hotel pool. Very impressive.

Ease of application: This is a bit of a cheat since the therapist does most of the work for you. However, one important point to note – shrinking violets need not apply! You will be required to stand completely starkers in front of a therapist who you’ve only just met….

Quality: The spray tan itself was easy to have applied and there was definitely no usual tell tale smell, even the morning after (you get to choose your own fragrance). The staff at Cucumba are friendly, helpful and warm – my only very slight gripe would be that the salon itself could do with a bit of a facelift. Some products on display were still wrapped in plastic and the décor was ever so slightly shabby. If you’re expecting a hotel spa type experience, in pristine white and minimalistic surroundings, you’ll probably be disappointed. But, if you’re looking for a fun, inexpensive treatment, in a salon where the therapists obviously know their stuff, then this just could be the place for you.
