Spring / Summer Bag Trends: Bags of fun for the season…

Dolce and Gabbana

Tassle BagEvery woman needs a bag. It doesn’t matter how fashion-conscious you are, we all need somewhere to put a purse, phone, tissues, medication, lip gloss and whatever else we need for the day. So, if you need a bag anyway, why not get one that is bang on trend for the season?

Like to make a statement? Well, you are in luck because this season’s bags are loud and they are proud. With everything from a brightly coloured furry clutch to a shark and even a speech bubble, designers have not held back and neither should you.

Ok, not all of us are wild at heart, so if you want something that’s both more practical than a shark-shaped clutch, but more stylish than a plastic carrier bag, the humble satchel (a long standing staple) isn’t going anywhere. In terms of size trends, medium-sized bags aren’t going to get much of a look in this season (beyond the satchel). Think tiny or gigantic!

My guess is you won’t go wrong opting for a massive tote as it will satisfy your storage needs and make you look ‘up to speed’ too. I have my heart set on either Michael Kors or Kate Spade – affordable yet super stylish.

Fabrics are going to be mostly PVC or leather and colours are going to be bright; it is spring after all. Metallics are making a comeback too.

If you like patterns then you are again in luck, as there is a trend for patterns and prints from quilted to snakeskin – yes, Amazonian prints are here to stay for at least the foreseeable future. Much like shoe trends for Spring/Summer 2014 (coming soon on the StyleAble website), bags are going to be full of embellishment – from glam to global influences.

For us, the best designs include sparkles, tassels, flowers and in some cases all three. If you don’t want something bright or busy, the humble black bag will always be a classic or for a modern alternative, there’s always the transparent bag – it just depends on how much of your belongings you want to share with the rest of the world…

*So what do you think of the mini handle trend? Its attaches to your hand in the same way that a horse brush does, but in a slightly more styled way…
