How on earth could I let Chinese New Year pass without mention, when it is the year of the Horse! (my year). For all my fellow Horse people – this includes Denzel Washington and Barbra Streisand, who I know will be reading this – here is a little bit about our characteristics and traits according to the Chinese zodiac. (Disclaimer: This post is extremely self indulgent, and will probably only matter if you, or someone you care about, is the year of the Horse. If this is not the case, feel free to roll your eyes).

Also, check out these gorgeous sweets designed by Hakkasan Group’s Michelin-starred dim sum tea-house, Yauatcha. They are collaborating with Harvey Nichols for Chinese New Year – including a fabulous ‘Year of the Horse’ window display and interior artwork…(I told you this was going to be self indulgent).

Cakes for Chinese New Year

Lucky Colours: Green, red, purple
Lucky Numbers: 3, 4, 9
Lucky Flowers: Giant taro, jasmine
Year of Birth: 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026

The horse ranks seventh of all the animals in the Chinese zodiac.

Good personality traits: Animated, active and energetic. Horse people love a crowd, so concerts, theaters, meetings, sporting occasions and parties are great. A fantastic sense of humour and masters of repartee,  Horse people love to take center stage and guess what…audiences love them right back.

Not so good personality traits: A little self-centered, they are still nosey enough to be interested in other’s problems (to help out of course). Horse people are more cunning than intelligent, due to a lack of confidence in their own ability.

Health:  Horse people are very healthy, most likely because of their positive attitude towards life. However, they are easily weakened by heavy responsibility from work. Horse people should never do overtime or get home very late. They should also refuse too many invitations to parties in the evening.

Career: Jobs involving communicating with others will be ideal for the Horse person. The sign of the Horse stands for leadership, management and decision-making – they despise taking orders. The Horse person can make it in any career that demands neither solitude nor meditation. They are too extroverted and need to be surrounded by people who approve or flatter them. Good career choices for Horses include: publicist, sales, journalist, language instructor, translator, bartender, performer, tour operator, librarian or pilot.

Relationships: Horse people are pleasant and amiable with an easy going disposition. Due to their good humour and geniality, they are easy to get along with and instantly put people at their ease. They are very quick-witted and know what you were going to say before you have had the chance to finish. In fact, they were on to you before you had even finished thinking. All of these traits guarantee their popularity and a large following of friends.

Compatibility:  Horse people are best with Tigers, Goats or Dogs.

Worst with: Horse people should stay away from the Rat, Ox, Rabbit or other Horse people.

*I ‘borrowed’ most of this information from ‘experts’ on other sites, so it must be true. Also, I ate the cakes below and they are marvellous. #yum
