An ode to the Skater Dress…

The old fit ‘n’ flare, the wear anywhere dress,  the go-to style for curvy girls and the summer choice for skinny girls too. Yes, the skater dress has a long history….By Saskia Barnet

White skater dress

So here’s the thing, before we got all body positive and ‘wear whatever you want, whenever you want’, body confident, I remember a time when  magazines and blogs would be filled with strict advice on what you should and should not wear for your shape.

To be clear, I subscribed to this way of thinking too.

I am what most would call ‘curvy’ with a relatively small waist,  so I was always told to go for nipped in styles that accentuated my curves. Inevitably, I steered clear from anything that did not give me an hourglass figure or showed off my curves in a ‘flattering’ way.

The skater dress was often at the top of my list as I was told it was the right cut /style for me.

In fact it became my fail safe, I had every variation and one for every occasion. Floral styles for lunch dates, navy for work and short, fun, flirty styles for hitting the clubs – there is a reason why figure skaters wear skater dresses, that swirl you get when you do a turn on the dance floor just can’t be beat!

Times have changed and I am much more likely to throw on a crop-top and high waisted jeans even on my fattest days – it’s safe to say that I  have outgrown previous restrictions.

That said, there is a part of me that misses the ease of dressing to a set of rules. It was easy,  I just went out and bought variations of the same thing…skater dress after skater dress. It’s was the easiest style to shop for as most stores will have some type of skater dress for the season (the younger the shop the shorter the length). Oh and you can wear ANYTHING with a skater dress. If you are going to be on your feet all day and need to wear flat shoes, it will look just as good as if you are wearing high heels with it to go out in the evenings. Cardigans, sweaters, leggings, jackets, boots, tights, jewellery and anything else will look good with a skater…

Could I go as far as to say that it is the perfect style of dress? I just can’t think of another style that is as easy to wear.

A recent online shopping session lead me to iKrush. I found a skater dress that just called to me. It would have been the exact type of style I would go for when skater dresses were the only thing in my wardrobe:

The only question is…do I really NEED another skater dress? And am I still that girl? I suppose there is only one way to find out.

What do you think? To buy or not to buy is the question…
