I know what you mean. Your mum has great taste! Really it’s about how we feel about ourselves. It took a while, but I had to stop thinking about what other people thought and really see myself and my own natural beauty and authenticity – I feel amazing with natural hair and the world is just going to have to deal with it :-). I haven’t written off having straight hair completely (not permanent, with hair straighteners) but I feel much happier with my natural curls. LOVE your hair too! You are gorgeous obvs. By the way…these photos are of a model not me. I have a curly afro! K.xx

My (white) mum always wanted me to have teeny tiny dreads as a child, not relaxed hair, as it was natural, easier for me to manage and a statement about my heritage. But my dad (who’ is black) was worried about the connations and judgements I would face at work and school (as he had experienced). Luckily these days things have moved on mostly and people are far more accepting of natural black hair styles!
