Halloween is fast approaching and for the first time ever, I am going all out. Every year, I am either too lazy to plan ahead or Halloween just creeps up on me, leaving me with no time to organise an outfit. We all know that there is no point in going to a Halloween party, unless you have a kick ass costume! For lazy butts like me, never fear, as getting one that doesn’t make you look like death warmed up (unless you want to) can actually be pretty straight forward. In fact, with a little forethought and some preparation you can end up looking both scary and stylish!

Style over Sex

Stylish Halloween costumes work better than those that leave you with too much leg or bust on display! Some people get carried away when it comes to baring all for Halloween, probably because they think noone will recognise them or that they are in ‘character’! I am no prude, but I have seen some sights and actually the best outfits are often the more stylish ones – think Morticia or Catwoman. Of course it’s your choice, but fancy dress can be as much about looking stylish and elegant as it is about looking startling – by following some basics you can ensure you do. Simply put, choose between a high hem or a low cut top…not both.

Make-up Matters

There are so many Youtube tutorials on how to apply Halloween make-up. My favourite make-up vlogging duo are Pixiwoo, they have some great tips on how to  do it and still look pretty (no mean feat). I have always thought that the make-up you wear for fancy dress is almost as important as the costume itself. This said, it is important to remember to consider your skin too. Cheaper, fancy dress make-up can cause all sorts of problems for the skin and though it may achieve the desired effect, it’s often worthwhile paying a little more to get a better product. Be sure to deep clean and treat your skin afterwards too.

Consider the Theme

Some parties are pretty restricting – they have a theme and you just have to stick to it. This may mean that you have to think outside of your comfort zone. I have heard of people throwing 80’s horror parties, angels and demons and even dead famous people parties #creepy. Whatever the theme, find out as far ahead as possible and get planning.

Groups

Dressing up as a group with your friends can be a great idea and can make a real impact when you walk in together. It can also be quite freeing, you may feel more comfortable dressed up as a zombie mermaid if you are not the only one! You can also share ideas, tips and save money by buying in bulk.

Wear a Wig (or a hat)

A wig can be a quick and easy way to look amazing without having to get your hair done or having to add colour. If you don’t want to wear a wig, then maybe try a hat as part of your costume. If all else fails, there are lots of clip on extensions you can try too.

What will you be wearing this Halloween?
