The Foundry, Camden (London)
The Foundry is Camden’s best kept secret. Hidden away on a side street, it is a stones throw from Camden station and the hustle, bustle and fun of Camden Lock – it is so well hidden in fact, that you may never have heard of it. However, do not let that put you off; it is well worth a visit. In fact the Foundry has become a StyleAble favourite and here’s why…
Atmosphere and decor: 10/10
I am always slightly dubious about visiting restaurants that are too well known or have been ‘hyped up’ alot. Too often, I have been left feeling disappointed, particularly when restaurants do not live up to their rave reviews. The feeling of being duped into trying an eatery that leaves you somewhat underwhelmed, can leave a bitter taste in the mouth in more ways than one. The Foundry is not one of those places. With the kind of chilled out atmosphere that you only really get in jazz clubs or underground hangouts, the Foundry is the place to go to relax, eat great food and listen to jazz music – yes, they have a live band on some nights.
Do not be fooled by the laid back, ‘come as you are’ feel at the Foundry, the chef is a heavy weight and he took his gloves off the day we visited! Perfect risotto, tender swordfish, desserts that were delicate yet bursting with flavour and to top it all off, hot chocolate that was thick enough to eat with a spoon! (made by the chefs very own secret recipe). We simply could not fault the food that was served to us, plate after delicious plate.
The great thing about the Foundry is that there is a lot of space and unlike other restaurants, they have not overfilled the space with tables. On our visit we were given a booth which was great, it was like having our own little area away from the rest of the restaurant with our very own waiter. The space had also been cleverly done with pictures of jazz musicians and soft lighting. Ah yes, the lighting! Perfect for setting the mood yet bright enough to read the menu – the only problem being that the print on the menu was not overly large, but with pretty good contrast it was not the worst we had ever seen. The toilets were on the ground floor and very easy to find.
Our waiter was happy to talk us through the menu and seemed to have tried most of the dishes, he could tell us which were the best for our tastes which was handy. His recommendation of the risotto was spot on and the swordfish was also a great choice. Despite being very full indeed, our waiter encouraged us to try the hot chocolate…I am so glad he did, as it was an experience I will never forget – seriously. After our meal we were shown around the restaurant which has a built in jazz club, outside area and balcony which overlooks the stage.
Total score: 38/40
Just a great night that ticked almost every box…I’ll be there on Sunday for a roast dinner with a little bit of jazz thrown.
